Small charity trustees: How to overcome key challenges

This short paper outlines the key challenges of being a trustee of a small charity and sets out recommendations to overcoming them.

Being a trustee of a small charity comes with many challenges. In this paper we draw on the advice and recommendations from the panel at NPC’s seminar held at the Clothworkers Company on 13th March 2017.

Three themes emerged from this discussion:

  • coping with limited funds and staff capacity;
  • balancing governance and operational roles; and
  • attracting new talent and keeping the board energised.
