Charities have faced significant changes over the last year. We have a new government with a commitment to volunteering on one hand, and massive public spending cuts on the other. There are also new services, initiatives, and resources for trustees.
Boards need to be on top of these changes. It is their responsibility to help charities respond to challenges and opportunities, supporting stressed executive teams and helping them to make difficult decisions about resources and priorities.
In Trusteeship 2010, we look at what has changed for charity trustees in the UK over the last year. The report provides a mixture of news and views, updating our review of trusteeship, Board matters, published in May 2009.
We believe that more could be done to support trustees. For example, we would like to see government and employers systematically give employees time off work for volunteering and offer incentives for becoming a trustee. Funders could do their bit too, for instance, by investing in board reviews.

The Big Society vision is all about social action. We would like to see government and employers taking concrete steps to encourage more people to become trustees.
