Diversity, equity and inclusion

How can charities better reflect the people they serve? How can charities and funders work towards a more equitable world?
The charity sector supports a diverse range of communities, people and causes. But this diversity is not reflected in its personnel, particularly at management level. People find it difficult to talk openly about what drives discrimination and exclusion.
In 2019 our #WalkingTheTalk initiative aimed to get the sector talking more about how charities ‘do’ diversity and inclusion and what might be holding the sector back. Come along to one of our debates and seminars to join the conversation as we investigate the big issues together.
Since then we have been working both internally on embedding diversity, equity and inclusion into all aspects of NPC as well encouraging the sector to do better. Through our think tank work we have worked collaboratively to ensure diverse voices are represented as well as sharing free resources to help others.
- Everyone’s Environment is working with social and environmental charities to accelerate action on the social impacts of the environmental crises. The environmental crises do not affect all people in the same way; some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised people are worst affected by our changing environment and related policy.
- Equitable evaluation sets out what we see as the key issues with evaluation that equitable evaluation seeks to address, the benefits that can arise from equitable evaluation, and some principles to consider in your work.
- Centring Lived Experience offers step-by-step guidance on how to effectively incorporate insight from lived experience throughout your organisation.
- With Civil Society Consulting we provide guidance on how to embed DEI in your grant-making. If grant-making is not diverse, equitable, or inclusive we risk perpetuating a system which favours those with the most wealth and power.
We have integrated these principles through our consultancy work and we push our clients to embed DEI issues in their work to create change practices whilst offering ongoing training, support and shared learning.
