What is about?

The theory of change approach is well known and used among charities, and now funders are increasingly drawn to its benefits. As both a process and a product, it encourages organisations to question how they influence change in a given context, drawing on evidence and learning, and map the steps leading to a desired outcome.

Our training is designed for grant-makers, corporate funders, and philanthropists who are considering using the tool to guide their work in a more strategic direction. The session will cover what we mean by the concept, how to create a theory of change and decide what form it should take, and then use it to underpin learning and improvement. It will also help you to assess when it is—and is not—appropriate, and if and how you should encourage grantees to develop their own.

With a group size of no more than 15, the workshop will be interactive and hands-on, and will be led by one of our experts in this area. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The training will help you:

  • Understand the model: learn what it is, where it comes from, and how it can be used to benefit your organisation.
  • Consider different types of theory of change: decide what form of theory of change your grant-making comes under.
  • Create your own: identify your end goal, and apply backwards mapping to your own organisation (or a programme) to identify and prioritise your outcomes. Use it to inform internal discussions, collecting the views of staff from across your organisation to achieve consensus and buy-in.
  • Decide whether to encourage your grantees to use a theory of change: learn about the benefits of theory of change for charities, and how you can encourage grantees to adopt the approach without overburdening them.
  • Review your theory of change: think through how to get information to assess whether your theory of change is working and use it to review your strategy.

Very informative and well delivered.

Who should attend?

The training is aimed at funders—grant-makers, corporate funders, and philanthropists—who are thinking about how they can use theory of change for themselves and their grantees. It is an introductory session and assumes no prior knowledge. It is particularly relevant for people who have a role in deciding the strategy of the fund or the programme.

Who will be delivering the training?

The training will be delivered by our consultants who are experts in providing strategic advice to funders.

Background reading:

This training is based on NPC’s years of work on theory of change. Check out our paper on theory of change for funders, which outlines different types of theory of change, how they should be used, and what types of funder they are most useful for.
