9.30am–12.40pm: Surgery Sessions

10am–11am: What do shifting political and public attitudes mean for charities? [Breakout session]

In this session we will hear how people’s attitudes on society are shifting and how politicians are responding to these changes. We will ask, what are people’s views of charities, and what does it mean for their future? How do these shifts shape political views nationally and locally, and how can charities respond to them?

Speaker: Dr Halima Begum, CEO, The Runnymede Trust, Kelly Beaver, Ipsos Mori and Dr Samuel Bruce, Senior Researcher, Centre for Social Justice. Chaired by Leah Davis, Head of Policy and External Affairs, NPC.

10am–11am: Trauma-informed approaches [Breakout session]

Trauma-informed approaches are ways of supporting people that recognise and respond to specific needs they may have as a result of past or ongoing trauma. But there is a danger that ‘trauma-informed’ becomes just another buzzword. In this session, we will discuss the potential benefits and pitfalls of trauma-informed approaches for charities, funders and the people they serve.

Speakers: Dilhani Wijeyesekera, Director, Baobab Foundation and Ray Sutton, Innovation Partner, Fulfilling Lives. Chaired by Katie Boswell, Associate Director, NPC.

11.15am–12.15pm: Climate change, human health and philanthropy [Breakout session]

What do the growing links between the environment and human health mean for funders? Join us to explore how funders can better understand and address the environmental determinates of health. From zoonotic diseases such as Covid-19 to the growing toll on our physical and mental health from increased heatwaves, flooding, and climate anxiety. Whatever issue you currently fund will undoubtably be affected by the climate crisis – especially our health and wellbeing, which will be felt heaviest among the least privileged communities in our society.

Speakers: Justin Johnson, Director, CIFF, Florence Miller, Chief Executive, Environmental Funders Network and Peninah Murageco-Deputy Director of the LSTHM Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health. Chaired by Liz Gadd, Principal, NPC.

11.15am–12.15pm: Building system leadership [Breakout session]

Traditional organisational leadership models, designed to build successful single organisations, are inadequate to deal with the complexity of the problems we face. The concept of system leadership offers an alternative model that may be better suited to the challenges of the sector. In this session we will explore how system leadership can convene and catalyse work across silos, align stakeholders, deal with power structures, and create the conditions for collective problem solving.

Speakers: Anna Birney, Global Director for Systems Learning at Forum for the Future and Nadine Smith, Director of Government and Enterprise at Social Finance. Chaired by Seth Reynolds, Systems Change Principal, NPC.
