Seminars for Trustees - NPC - New Philanthropy Capital

Funder drop-in: participatory grant-making

About this event

Our funder and philanthropist drop-ins are for staff and trustees at grant-making organisations, and individual philanthropists on topics of interest to the sector.

Increasingly funders are placing affected communities at the centre of grant-making, giving them to the power to decide who and what to fund. Shifting decision-making power can be challenging for foundations but the impact can also be huge.

In this drop-in, we will hear from some funders that are already doing participatory grant-making, and explore different ways to engage communities in decision making.

We will cover:

  • How to get started with participatory grant-making
  • How to get trustees and other stakeholders on board
  • How to manage accessibility and engagement in remote formats, including:
    • Managing digital power imbalances
    • Building trust and rapport using online tools
  • Blended approach – where has online and in-person engagement worked well?
  • Inclusion by design (accommodating disabilities, language differences, limited connectivity).

We’re delighted to be joined by Natasha Friend for this event, current Director of Camden Giving, who will be speaking at the session alongside NPC’s Alex Hayes and Clare Wilkins.

Chatham House rule applies during this event.
