In memory of Peter Wheeler

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Peter Wheeler, co‑founder and long‑standing trustee of New Philanthropy Capital (NPC).

Peter had a rare ability to see where a need existed and to fill it. From NPC’s earliest days, he recognised gaps in how charities and funders could maximise their impact. His generosity, drive and passion built the organisation from the ground up, shaping a culture of evidence, insight, and practical action that has guided NPC ever since.

Throughout his time on the board, Peter combined strategic vision with generosity of spirit. He encouraged us to question assumptions, think rigorously, and act decisively, all in pursuit of meaningful change. His contributions went far beyond formal meetings: he inspired colleagues, guided partners, and left a lasting imprint on our whole community.

Peter’s legacy is not only in the organisation he helped create, or the thousands of organisations that have subsequently benefited from NPC’s resources, but in the culture of curiosity, integrity, and impact that continues to guide NPC today.

Every member of staff and alumni we have spoken to in the last few days has a story about Peter, centring on how he helped gee them up or guide them with his insights and questioning. On behalf of all staff and trustees, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
