The Monday Charitable Trust
The challenge
The Monday Charitable Trust (MCT) is a grant-making foundation focused on improving the life chances of disadvantaged and marginalised groups in the UK, particularly in housing, education, and environmental crises. To finance its charitable work, MCT is adopting new investment approaches, including sustainable investment strategies and impact investments aimed at achieving both financial returns and positive social impact. As a result, MCT sought NPC’s support in developing an impact investment strategy for a part of its endowment.
NPC’s approach
NPC worked with the trustees of the foundation to support the development of their impact investment strategy and an impact investment policy statement. Through presenting them with an analysis of the impact investing landscape for their priority impact themes, NPC developed the trustees’ understanding of the depth and breadth of investment opportunities available to them. NPC also provided the trustees with an assessment of the different strategic options available in terms of risk, financial return, impact, and liquidity of investments. The findings from these activities were used to draft an impact investment policy for MCT.
The result
NPC’s support increased the confidence of MCT’s trustees in identifying investment opportunities that can deliver a positive financial return while making an impact on MCT’s priority impact themes. As a result of NPC’s work, MCT is now looking to start investing out of their impact-focused endowment.
‘NPC created a well-researched document at the end of the project based on sound industry knowledge that we can rely on to progress on our impact investment strategy.’
