Systems Change Community of Practice (Dec )
Making choices in the face of complexity
About this event
NPC’s Systems Change Community of Practice is a space for people interested in systems change to connect, learn from one another and explore what systems thinking means for their organisations, work and practice. It builds on NPC’s wider systems practice work and is intended to help people share experiences, challenges and learning from their own systems change journeys, while developing their practice alongside peers.
The next session:
Following feedback from our last session in September, we know participants want to hear more about navigating the practical challenges, choices and trade-offs involved in systems change.
That’s why, in our next Community of Practice meeting, we are going to explore making choices in the face of complexity. Many organisations want to take a systems approach, but doing so rarely happens under perfect conditions. The system may be difficult to define, evidence may be incomplete, and partners may have competing priorities. Systems change therefore involves making choices about where to focus, what role to play, who to work with and what not to do.
This session will focus on some of these choices. Drawing on real dilemmas that we’ll ask you to share in a pre-event survey, together we’ll explore how organisations can find a useful role within a wider system while remaining open to learning and adapting as things change. We’ll draw in some tools from NPC’s systems practice toolkit, but we are also keen for participants to share their own reflections on making choices in the face of complexity.
Together, we’ll consider aspects such as:
- How to decide where you can make the greatest contribution
- How to distinguish what you can influence from what you can’t
- How to balance focus with flexibility
- When to persevere, adapt or stop.
This session will be lead by Jessica Weir, NPC Principal Consultant. Come ready to get involved – it will be interactive and will involve participation.
Accessibility
We are actively working to improve the accessibility of our online and in-person events. As part of our commitment, for all online events we use live closed captions and upload the recordings to YouTube which has the capability to select subtitles. For in-person events we strive to use accessible venues. If you have any additional accessibility requirements that we can assist with, please email us at Events@thinkNPC.org.
