International development funding by UK trusts and foundations

Funding work in developing countries can be rewarding but challenging. The international scene is often new and unfamiliar territory for funders and they can struggle with the operational difficulty of funding international charities.

Going global explores the benefits and challenges of funding international development and looks at the different approaches funders can take. The report focuses on foundations giving between £50,000 and £1m to international development work each year.

The report explores:

  • the role of foundations in funding international development
  • which UK foundations are currently funding internationally and how they are doing it, and
  • different methods of funding international development.

Many of the report’s findings, such as the pros and cons of different approaches, and options for working with others in the international area, will be useful to individual and corporate funders thinking of funding international development or already doing so.

If you are interested in discussing the findings of the report, please contact Lucy de Las Casas.

This report was commissioned by the Baring Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Nuffield Foundation.
