Tommy’s
The Challenge
Tommy’s is a charity dedicated to preventing baby loss and ensuring safe pregnancies and births for all. They fund pioneering research, provide expert midwife-led advice, and advocate for improvements in maternity care to support families throughout their pregnancy journey.
Tommy’s began working with NPC in October 2022, seeking support to develop their new strategy. As part of this process, Tommy’s identified a need to better understand how its work leads to change, and to better measure and communicate its impact. We supported Tommy’s development of their strategy and theory of change.
Following the successful completion of these stages, Tommy’s asked NPC to help them develop a measurement framework and a dashboard to collect data and track outcomes identified in the theory of change.
NPC’s Approach
In this project, we supported Tommy’s to make sense of their data and better measure their impact.
Tommy’s strategy had set out the impact they wanted to make. We created a measurement framework that included a set of indicators for each of the outcomes prioritised in the strategy. We used our ’five types of data‘ framework to do this.
The measurement framework became the basis of an impact dashboard. We created an interactive dashboard powered by Microsoft Power BI, bringing together data from different sources including spreadsheets and Tommy’s’ survey platform.
The visuals in the dashboard are designed to show changes over time across all of Tommy’s priority outcomes. This data can be filtered by socioeconomic status and ethnicity, to help Tommy’s understand its progress against its strategic goal of increased equity.
National statistics and policy indicators are also fed into the dashboard, allowing Tommy’s to track wider changes in the landscape.
We added sections for commentary on data, offering teams the opportunity to reflect on the data they have collected and share their insights into the quantitative figures.
The Result
The measurement framework enabled the charity to measure progress against its priorities, exploring different indicators that can best do this.
The dashboard offers an interactive way to bring learning together, encouraging staff to engage in data collection and analysis.
NPC has been invaluable in our mission to develop dashboards that measure the delivery of our strategy. They supported us in the translation of our strategic outcomes into meaningful measures, and worked with us to build interactive dashboards that measure our progress towards meeting our strategy. We could not have delivered this without their expertise and support. They have been with us every step of the journey!
