Building on potential

Response to the Labour consultation with the sector

As the Labour Party concludes its consultation with the charity sector, NPC urges shadow ministers to rethink its pledge on public service commissioning, and to look closely at the future of volunteering and the impact charities have on the ground.

We welcome the Labour Party’s consultation on building the charity sector’s potential so it can have the greatest possible impact on the people who turn to it for support. The goal of any future government should be to help shape a sustainable, expert charity sector, and NPC will be pleased to work alongside ministers and officials to make this happen.

We have not answered questions proposed in the consultation that go beyond our experience and knowledge. Instead, we have organised our response under the below headings, each suggested in the original consultation and covering key areas of our expertise:

  • The commissioning environment
  • Measuring and improving charity impact
  • The future of charity volunteering

We have warned Labour against rolling-out proposals to offer some contracts exclusively to the voluntary sector.

We’re taking part in the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network live Q&A with Lisa Nandy, shadow minister for civil society, on Tuesday 16 September 1-2pm. Lisa is also speaking at our annual conference on 23 October.
